When I was young, teachers would tell us that violence in music lyrics was the cause of all crimes throughout the world. I grew up and the trend shifted, suddenly violence on TV and Movies was the mother cause of every existing inch of evil. Nowadays, violence in video games is the reason behind Al-Qaeda and pretty much everything that’s bad for ya.
One other thing that has shifted is the fact that playing a video game is no longer a bad thing to do. There is no “drop your games and go play outside!” anymore. Nowadays a father will teabag a dude in a Call of Duty game and high five his kid that’s playing Zelda on the Wii. Video Games are accepted and common in our lives.The medias put them everywhere and it is known that you’re no longer a geek because you have an Xbox at home. I was shy to bring my gameboy to school when I got it. I was afraid I would get called a nerd. Today you’re a loser if you don’t have a DS!
Something that concerns me though is that it’s still common for nerds and geeks and dorks to be around but these categories of people are broad and often differently defined. I will try my best as to group them properly.
NERD
Hardcore WoW player that ditches his very few friends for his online guild for a 6hours raid at 11pm on a weekday. The Nerd doesn’t really have a social life. He is very sociable…online. He loves games and it has often taken a toll on the rest of his life.
DORK
Die hard fan of Star Trek; speaks Klingon and loves to dress up. The dork has, just like the nerd, no social life but he still loves to correct people. Dorks will be found at Tabletop role playing games gatherings showing his prowess on how much he knows every stupid details about said games. He takes pride in being apart from common humans because he sees this as being above humans.
GEEK
Has played that upcoming game already. He knows about games from blogs, forums and websites. Has a bit of a social life but will often fancy a game of Gears over a beer.
DOUCHE
He fucking owned your ass at Halo 3 in between some Madden games, bro. The douche plays game just for competitive purpose. The pleasure he gets from games is to win against other humans. The rest is useless.
GAME DEV, a category apart.
Fancy a beer? We’re a cool mix; we love games enough to be making them however not enough to impact our social life. We’ll never say no to a woman or a beer or playing a game while drinking with friends and women.
