Right, this will be a short post; there’s usually nothing coming in August…
- Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game
- Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days
- Mafia II
- Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium Online
- Jumpgate Evolution
Still we have some interesting stuff with the 40k MMO, the long-awaited Jumpgate, the exquisite Mafia II, Kane & Lynch 2 hoping it will be much better than the shitty first one and finally the cool old-school Scott Pilgrim.

Ever noticed all games follow a trend? A few years ago someone came up with the idea that you don’t need a medkit to heal; just wait a bit and it’ll heal all by itself. Today everybody has auto-heal in their games. The medkit is an obsolete mechanic. What did auto-heal bring to the gamers? Less time spent restarting from checkpoint, less time spent looking for a medkit and more time spent going through the game.
Did you realize we also have more Wow moments than actual story progression in the latest games? Ever wondered why everyone is doing that? Less time spent understanding the story more time spent playing the game. How come the games tend to last about 5 to 6 hours now? It used to be 30!
Games today are the product of their popularity and of the competition it created. A game has to have cutting edge graphics, epic moments and be filled with non-stop action. It has to sell; it must sell. The plan is simple; make sure the gamer buys the game and leaves it in his console for as long as possible. Build a visually amazing game with lots of action that isn’t too long so it will bore the player; make sure to include either coop or multiplayer, don’t bother with the story because no one listens to it stir and let it cool for two hours then serve for 70$. Make sure to serve another serving with equally astounding DLC until you announce the upcoming sequel.
Games of today are not crap. They’re not shit and the games we had when we were younger are not better. We’re in an era where games need to come out fast so they follow the trend and be amazing visually so they follow the standards. The results are good games but with less depth. Old school gamers; stop wishing games were like they were back in the day and young gamers stop hating on old school gamers; the generation of fast-food gaming will end as well.
All things do the same; they come to life, grow, peak, fall and die.
After fast-food will come another generation of games. In the mean-time we can still enjoy the marvels of this gaming era such as Modern Warfare 2, Uncharted 2, Assassin 2, Mass Effect 2 and Army of Two 2…. Is it me or only sequels generate money these days?
